Is artificial turf tacky?

I posted another question re: how to lay real turf, but it seems like a lot of hard work and hassle to prepare the ground etc and I don't think my soil is good enough to grow a lush lawn - even with top soil (a lot plants seem to die in my garden).

I saw an ad in my local newspaper for a company that supplies artificial turf...I am tempted - I only want to cover a small area of my back garden (just want a bit of green amongst the shingle)..
Does anybody know if artifical turf would look the part or would it just look cheap and tacky?

VERY TACKY.
Use a small fine flowering ground cover instead. Your neighbors will thank you.
